The colourful world of an NRL cheerleader

As a sports fan, you may have caught a glimpse of the cheerleaders at a game, cheering from the sidelines for your favourite team.

Their attempts are all aimed at motivating your team. After all, it is their team too and the colours they wear are worn with pride.

No matter the result, there is one thing for certain, the cheerleaders will give their all for their team.

The Roosters cheerleaders granted us access to go behind the scenes. A preview of their routines and how they work together was on show.

As the girls rested from their routines, we had a few questions and the same theme kept surfacing.

"We do it for the love of it, it keeps us active and we make friends for life."

The emphasis was on how much they enjoy the interaction with players, fans and the community.

What became apparent was the self-confidence and support in one another. The respect and perseverance to do better, to help improve others and to keep that smiling face for all to see.

Sydney Roosters cheerleader coach Robyn Parras says the process of making the final team is a gruelling one.

"We get around 100 girls at our auditions. The girls come in, perform their dance but we also interview the girls. We look for a well-rounded club ambassador," Parras said.

"We look for girls that don’t just look good on the field. We want girls who can liaise with our fans and club members. (We look for) people who can really strike that personable feeling and we want role models for the other girls as well."
