A Queensland Cup footballer is in intensive care in a Brisbane hospital after suffering a terrible on-field injury on Saturday.

James Ackerman, 24, was playing for Sunshine Coast Falcons when he was hurt early in the first half in a tackle.

The match against North Devils at Bishop Park, Nundah was immediately called off after the seriousness of the injury was realised.

He was treated on the field for 40 minutes before being transferred to a Brisbane hospital where he remains in intensive care.

Sunshine Coast Falcons chairman Ashley Robinson said the club was shaken by the incident.

"Right now I'm only concerned about James, his family, the staff and the players who were at the game," he said.

"We're hoping and praying that James recovers.

"We're waiting for an update from the medical staff at the Royal Brisbane Hospital."

It comes just weeks after another young player, Kurt Drysdale, was hospitalised after a bad tackle.
