A lot has been written and said about who should coach NSW next season with Ricky Stuart having now stood down.

Laurie Daley, Jim Dymock, Trent Barrett, Brad Fittler and Phil Gould have all been touted as the man to try and end Queensland's seven-year domination.

I think it is time NSW looked outside the square and nominated a coach and coaching director.

With that in mind, I would opt for Daley as coach and Gould as coaching director.

Daley is ready for the job. He has coached Country for the past five years and played 23 times for the Blues.

His passion and commitment to NSW cannot be questioned.

Given he has no NRL coaching experience though, maybe Gould should be appointed NSW coaching director.

It would be a formidable team.

Gus has previously coached the Blues for eight series and won premierships at Canterbury and Penrith.

He is easily the most successful of the candidates when it comes to coaching experience.

Don't get me wrong, I think all the contenders have strong claims.

Fittler coached the Sydney Roosters at NRL level while Barrett and Dymock were assistants to Stuart over the past two years.

But I like the look of a Daley-Gould partnership.

There would certainly be plenty of theatre with Gould there. He knows Origin and he knows how to win at Origin level.

Personally I reckon Stuart made the right choice to move aside. Coaching NSW and a club side is near impossible.

I am also sure Parramatta fans will be relieved that Ricky is now pouring every bit of energy into the Eels - and not leaving the club for six weeks mid-season.

With that in mind, I also think the ARL Commission should consider a Kangaroos coach without any club affiliation.

I am not having a shot at Tim Sheens here - he has been a great coach over many years.

But there is always innuendo and speculation over selections when a club coach is in charge of a representative side.

Some might suggest Gould has a club side in Penrith but he isn't the coach so there wouldn't any conflict of interest.

Either way the NSW job will be difficult given Queensland's dominance.

Stuart certainly brought back some lost passion into NSW as a state.

Gould has the personality and coaching skill to push Queensland right to the brink.

He can annoy some fans, particularly those in Queensland, but even that get the Origin juices flowing.

Laurie Daley and Phil Gould together - I reckon it is the ideal combination for NSW.
