'I know from my time in Aberdeen that you always had to be better Rangers,' Snelders

Former Aberdeen and Rangers goalkeeper Theo Snelders says it’s great to see the Dons having the joy of a League Cup final to look forward to.

Snelders arrived at Pittodrie in 1988 and stayed there until 1996, when he moved to Ibrox for three years.

The Dutchman won the League Cup with both clubs.

“I still know a lot of people who work at Aberdeen and I know how hard they are working,” Snelders told BBC Radio Scotland.

“It was nice to see them given the joy of going to another final.

“It was my first major honour lifting that trophy (the League Cup) and you never forget it. Looking around at the players we had at that time; McLeish, Miller, Nicholas, Connor, Mason – it was great. We had a great time in Aberdeen.

“You associate Aberdeen with winning trophies but in the football landscape, things have changed. Money rules and clubs who have a lot of money can spend more and win trophies.

“The manager who came in at Rangers is a highly rated manager and he’s changing things around, so it will be difficult. I know from my time in Aberdeen that you always had to be better than them. It’s a tough one but a nice one to look forward to and it gives them energy for all the games to play before that.

“I was back in Aberdeen for the PAOK game for a couple of days with my friend Paul Mason. It was great to catch up again and we visited Paul’s old neighbours.”
