Klay Thompson hit 10 straight 3-pointers, tied NBA record in rout of Lakers

Klay Thompson is well past his shooting slump.

He made that abundantly clear on Monday night.

The Golden State Warriors star made his first 10 3-pointers in his team’s 130-111 blowout win against the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center Monday night, putting up 44 points through three quarters.

That mark tied former Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson’s NBA record, when he hit 10 in a row before finishing 10-of-11 for 37 points in 2011. Lawson had also become the first player in league history to hit 10 3-pointers in a game on fewer than 13 attempts.

“That was hard. That’s hard to do,” Thompson said, via 95.7 The Game. “I thought I had 11 for a second, but that’s basketball.”

Thompson didn’t miss a shot from behind the arc until late in the third quarter, and exited the game for the final time having shot 17-of-20 from the field for 44 points through three quarters. By that point, the Warriors had built up a 110-80 lead, and cruised to the 19-point win — the team’s eighth consecutive victory.

“They went in tonight, fortunately,” Thompson said after the game. “When you got the hot hand, you’re just looking for that little ounce of space, because all you need is an inch or two. That thing is just flicking off your wrist so easy, and it just happened to be one of those nights.”

Kevin Durant added 20 points and six rebounds for the Warriors, and Steph Curry put up 11 points and had 12 assists. Those three were the only Warriors to score in double figures, though all 12 players who saw the court for Golden State scored in the game.

Ivica Zubac led the Lakers with 18 points off the bench. Brandon Ingram put up 17 points, and Kyle Kuzma added 16. While they had a solid shooting percentage — the Lakers shot 50 percent from the field — they made just five 3-pointers.

The Lakers were once again with out LeBron James, who is still recovering from a groin injury he suffered on Christmas Day. Since then, the Lakers have gone just 5-9.

Thompson’s shooting night was in stark contrast to his performance just a month prior, when was averaging just 11 points per contest during a four-game span over Christmas. It also marked his 13th career 40-point game, a feat he accomplished while only playing 26 minutes.

It seems the 28-year-old shot himself out of that slump, and is back to his peak self.
