Kim's Convenience star lands next lead movie roleCBC

Kim's Convenience star Andrea Bang will appear in the upcoming gambling drama Surrender opposite Gilmore Girls' Keiko Agena.

Bang, known for the role of Janet Kim on the Canadian sitcom, will play protagonist Naomi in Surrender as well as executive producing, with writer-director Jess Dang making her feature directorial debut on the picture (via Deadline).

Bang's Naomi is a young, Asian-American woman who's looking to escape past trauma and falls into the world of blackjack to regain a sense of control. She soon finds herself addicted to the game, having a hard time balancing her successful, picture-perfect persona during her day job and her high-limit blackjack player secret identity.

"Her compulsive gambling puts her in a secret cycle of shame as she suppresses her internal feelings to appear externally sound, impacting her mental health," the synopsis continues.

The same concept was at the heart of a 2021 short also featuring Bang and Agena.

Alongside her stint on Kim's Convenience, which ran for five season until its cancellation in 2021, Bang has been seen in family series A Million Little Things, horror Fresh, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan, and romantic drama Float with Upload's Robbie Amell, commercially released just a few days ago.

On Instagram, Bang looked back on shooting the movie with Amell, joking that filming was made challenging because of insects that would try and sneak their way into scenes.

"Made this with some incredibly talented people… and insects. In the scene above, a family of wasps tried to get into the film. Maybe you'll see Sandy?" she wrote on February 11.

"And once I find the photos I took on-set, I'll also put them up so you can see the awesome souls that made this such a blast to make. I hope you enjoy!"

Kim's Convenience is available to stream in the UK via Netflix.
