‘Modern Family’ star Eric Stonestreet joins Kansas City Royals ownership group

Eric Stonestreet is part of the ownership group led by John Sherman that officially purchased the Kansas City Royals this week.

Longtime Kansas City sports fan and “Modern Family” actor Eric Stonestreet now owns a piece of his favorite team.

Stonestreet is now officially a part owner of the Kansas City Royals, joining the ownership group led by John Sherman.

Stonestreet — who plays Cameron Tucker on ABC’s “Modern Family” — confirmed the news on Tuesday night.

“It is no secret how passionate I am about Kansas City, Kansas City sports and Major League Baseball,” Stonestreet said. “When this opportunity arose to invest in the Royals, I could not think of a more exciting or fitting way to combine one of my passions with my love for the great people of my hometown. I look forward to being part of a group working to bring championship baseball to Kansas City one again.”

Sherman had been in talks to purchase the Royals for $1 billion for months before the sale was approved on Monday. Sherman and his investors were then introduced on Tuesday.

“On behalf of our distinguished group of Kansas City-centric investors, I am humbled by the opportunity to carry forward and build on the important legacy of the Kansas City Royals,” Sherman said in a statement. “This is an ownership group that brings an impressive collection of skills and strengths across multiple sectors. They bring both business and sports acumen, entrepreneurial curiosity, a willing to embrace risk, and a deep commitment to civic and community engagement in Kansas City. What is perhaps most valuable is that each of them also brings the passion and the heart of a fan. Collectively, they will bring great value to the journey.”

Stonestreet is a Kansas City native and graduated from Kansas State. He has starred on the popular ABC show since 2009, and even participated in an episode with Royals legend George Brett last year. He has held roles in “Identity Thief,” “The Loft” and “The Secret Life of Pets,” among other things.

Stonestreet is also a big Chiefs fan, and even dropped into their training camp this year as “Randy Reid,” coach Andy Reid’s younger brother, for a hilarious skit.

The Royals have yet to make the postseason since winning the World Series in 2015, and are fresh off a pair of seasons in which they failed to win 60 games. Stonestreet and his ownership group marks just the third for the Royals since the club was established in 1969.
