Julie Andrews is okay closing the chapter on The Princess Diaries.

The actress, 88, told TODAY.com that "sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone" when asked if there would be a third installment to The Princess Diaries franchise.

"It’s quite a long time now since the two Diaries were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone. I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, 'til it’s dead."

It's been 23 years since the first film hit theaters. In it, Andrews starred as Queen Clarisse Renaldi alongside Anne Hathaway, who plays her granddaughter Mia Thermopolis.

The film follows Mia's journey after learning that she is the heir to Genovia's throne. Mia ascends to the throne in the 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Noting that she has been asked "so many times" about a follow-up film, Andrews told TODAY.com that she would "be very happy if we did do another one. But I don’t expect to."

In 2019, Hathaway revealed during an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that there was a "script for the third movie."

"I want to do it. Julie wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it," Hathaway said at the time.

Andrews confirmed during her conversation with TODAY.com that "there was dialogue" about the project but noted that "nothing had been realized."

"And I think I may be wrong, but I think it’s been shelved now. I can't be sure," said Andrews.

Hathaway told PEOPLE back in January 2023 that releasing a third film is a "process that requires patience."

"Everybody should consider themselves a part of the movie business now because this is how long it actually takes to make things," she said.
