As per production company El Deseo, the trio have signed on for the next project from the acclaimed Spanish filmmaker, which will be his first English-language feature following short films The Human Voice and Strange Way of Life.
“Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton to star in Pedro Almodóvar's new film, The Room Next Door,” read a post on Instagram. “The actresses put themselves at the orders of [the] director in a drama between mother and daughter that will be shot in spring in New York and Madrid.”
The synopsis from production and distributing company Pathé says The Room Next Door follows “an imperfect mother and daughter, separated by a huge misunderstanding. At the heart of this conflict, Ingrid (Moore), a friend of Martha (Swinton), the mother, becomes a witness to the pain and bitterness of each of them.
“The film addresses the boundless cruelty of wars and highlights the two writers' singular approaches to portraying reality. It explores the themes of death, friendship, and sexual pleasure, which are considered essential allies in the fight against horror.”
“In a house nestled in the heart of a nature reserve in New England, the two friends will experience a situation that is both extreme and surprisingly tender,” concludes the logline.
Moore will soon have a starring role on the small screen with Mary & George, an historical drama that focuses on the lives of Mary Villiers (Moore) and her son George (Nicholas Galitzine), the 1st Duke of Buckingham.
There is currently no release date for The Room Next Door. Mary & George will premiere on Sky Atlantic and Starz in 2024.
