Jordan Thompson has saved a match point en route to a first-round win over Cameron Norrie at the Astana Open in Kazakhstan.

The No.8 seed, Thompson came from a set down to beat his British opponent 5-7 7-6 (8-6) 6-2.

Norrie held a match point in the second-set tiebreak but failed to convert.

It allowed Thompson to make the most of his second chance as he broke Norrie twice in the deciding set.

The 26-year-old Australian, ranked 60th in the world, never looked back to wrap up victory in two hours and 40 minutes.

It proved a deflating finish for Norris who had bounced back well from a disappointing first-round defeat in the French Open, reaching the last eight in St Petersburg.

Thompson's compatriot James Duckworth suffered an early exit, bowing out with a 6-4 7-6 (7-5) loss to the Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco.
