Jon Patton suffers suspected ACL injury at training

Scans are expected to confirm that GWS forward Jon Patton has suffered the third ACL injury of his career.

The 25-year-old went down at training and landed awkwardly on his left knee, which is considered his good knee.

Patton tore his right ACL in 2013 and again late in 2014, an injury that caused him to miss most of the 2015 season.

“The initial diagnosis for Jon doesn’t look positive however we’ll await the results of scans on Friday,” GWS footy boss Wayne Campbell said.

“He has the full support of everyone at the Giants during this challenging time.”

Patton, under contract until the end of the 2020 season, previously had issues with the patellar tendon in his left knee in 2012 and ventured to Sweden to undergo surgery.

His horror injury news comes on the back of GWS losing fellow key forward Jeremy Cameron to a five-game suspension last week, while Toby Greene also remains out injured.

Cameron missed Saturday night’s victory over Hawthorn, which featured Patton standing tall despite suffering a knock to his right knee in a third-quarter ruck contest.

The win over the Hawks lifted GWS to sixth on the AFL ladder but they remain in the eight by just two premiership points, with a finals berth still no guarantee.

GWS will face West Coast, Richmond and Port Adelaide across the next three weeks.
