Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson: Was Live Netflix Event a Knockout? Sometimes Down for the Count? Grade It!

Netflix’s live, Friday-night presentation of Most Valuable Promotions’ bout between Jake “El Gallo” Paul aka The Problem Child (11-1, 7 KOs) and “Iron” Mike Tyson aka The Baddest Man on the Planet (50-7, 44 KOs) at times appeared on the ropes, from a technical perspective.

Buffering/freezing and sound issues occasionally compromised the live streaming event, which was held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in front of an audience of 72,300. (The match was originally supposed to take place in July, but an ulcer flare up forced Tyson’s doctors to intervene.)

Tyson managed to hang tough for all eight rounds, but Paul emerged victorious by unanimous decision (80-72, 79-73 x 2).

The gate for Paul vs. Tyson surpassed $18 million, double the previous Texas gate record for combat sports in both boxing and MMA.

The star-studded ringside audience included Evander Holyfield, Shaquille O’Neal, Sugar Ray Leonard, Jerry Jones, Charlize Theron, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka (of Netflix’s Cobra Kai), Josh Duhamel (of Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy upcoming Ransom Canyon), Joe Jonas, Joe Manganiello, Lennox Lewis, Rob Gronkowski, Mike Epps, Simu Liu, Daddy Yankee, Anderson Silva, Tom Segura, Jeff Ross and Joey Fatone.

Ahead of Paul vs. Tyson, a rematch between MVP’s Amanda “Real Deal” Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs) and Ireland’s Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) saw Serrano get headbutted multiple times by Taylor, who was ultimately deducted a point. Serrano landed 324 punches compared to Taylor’s 217, but Taylor eked out a unanimous decision victory (95-94 x 3), retaining her undisputed women’s lightweight championship.
