Jack Watts reveals off-season pain in emotional interview

Jack Watts has revealed how a controversial off-season affected him after he helped new club Port Adelaide to a round one win over his former club, Melbourne.

The former number one draft pick endured a scandal-filled summer, involved in a texting scandal before a video of him snorting white powder off a woman’s breasts at Oktoberfest in Munich last October also surfaced.

Port Adelaide chairman David Koch labelled his recruit “brainless” in the wake of the footage’s circulation.

But Watts proved his doubters wrong on Saturday afternoon, and in an emotional post-game interview on Fox Footy, it was clear what the win meant to the 27-year-old.

The former Demon seemed on the verge of tears at times during the interview.

“It was a really tough few months, to be honest,” Watts said.

“After those last few months, that day is just incredible – what a fight by the boys.

“It is just pure relief. I had weeks where I didn’t want to get out of bed. I’ve never experienced anything like that.

“I’d cop more s*** from people saying I’m not good at footy for a thousand years compared to what I’ve been through the past few months.”

Power switch on

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has declared his side’s 26-point upset win over Melbourne as his best as an AFL coach.

The Power were superb on Saturday at the MCG, serving up the first boilover of the season to down the Demons 12.15 (87) to 9.7 (61).

Justin Westhoff kicked five-straight goals and Tom Rockliff tallied 44 possessions in the win that marks the Power as a team to watch in 2019.

“What a day at the G, hey?” Hinkley exclaimed after the match.

“There is absolutely no doubt in my mind. This is the best win I’ve been involved with at Port Adelaide including finals.

“Because of the side we put out there. Because of the braveness that we showed right through the summer.

“Because of the commitment of a great group of young people.

“I think there were a lot of doubters.

“I’m really pleased and really proud of them.”

Port Adelaide were led by stellar efforts from Justin Westhoff, who booted five goals, as well as the midfield grunt of Tom Rockliff, Sam Powell-Pepper and Travis Boak.
