Ons Jabeur and Garbine Muguruza have boosted their hopes of qualifying for the WTA Finals with victories in the quarter-finals of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic.

Both currently sit on the cusp of making it to Guadalajara and are set to climb up the standings, with Jabeur knocking out top-seed Elina Svitolina and Muguruza seeing off Mai Hontoma.

Jabeur had never beaten Svitolina but the world No.6 had never faced the new, improved Jabeur, who is in the midst of a career-best season.

Jabeur, who came into the tournament ranked a career-best 16th, fell behind 4-1 in the first set before rallying for a 6-4 6-2 victory.

The Tunisian won her 43rd match of the year, tying her with second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka for the most on the WTA Tour.

Hontoma was the surprise package in a strong final eight but was comfortably beaten by Muguruza, who prevailed 6-3 6-2.

She next faces Czech Marketa Vondrousova, who battled past Danielle Collins 6-7 (7-4) 6-0 7-6 (7-3).

The final match saw Olympic champion Belinda Bencic take on fifth seed Elena Rybakina, and the contest ended in unfortunate circumstances with Bencic forced to retire trailing 6-4 3-1 after hurting her right knee.

The top two seeds will meet in the final of the Astana Open.

No.1 seed and home hope Yulia Putintseva defeated Rebecca Peterson 6-2 6-4 and will take on Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck, who saw off Jaqueline Cristian 6-3 6-3.
