Injury-hit Vondrousova, Norrie pull out of US Open
Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and British No 2 Cameron Norrie have withdrawn from the US Open as both players continue to recover from injuries that kept them out of the Paris Olympics.
Czech Vondrousova pulled out of the Games due to a hand injury, saying her focus was on being ready for the year's final Grand Slam in New York.
She has not played since a first-round loss at Wimbledon in July, making her the first woman since 1994 to lose her opening match at a Wimbledon a year after winning the title.
Norrie, whose best US Open result came in 2022 when he reached the fourth round, pulled out of the Olympics due to a forearm injury.
"I have been working hard to get my body to full health - unfortunately my forearm injury is not recovering as soon as I would have hoped," he said on Instagram.
"Therefore I will not be able to compete in this year's US Open. I'll take some rest and recharge. Can't wait to get back competing like a dog."
It continues a miserable 2024 for Norrie, whose ranking has slid down to 46 amid a poor run of form.
Petra Martic replaces Vondrousova in the women's draw, while Francisco Comesana takes Norrie's spot in the men's bracket for the year's last Grand Slam tournament.
The draw for the US Open is next Thursday, with the tournament opening on August 26.
