Iconic football commentator attacked by cowardly fan

Legendary football broadcaster Martin Tyler was reportedly attacked during an ill-tempered match in England.

The 72-year-old was punched by a spectator during Woking’s National League South fixture against Wealdstone, his club claimed.

The incident occurred during the second half of the match, just as the opposition scored a crucial goal to take the lead in the 85th minute.

A Wealdstone supporter allegedly reached over the advertising boards in the aftermath of the goal and struck the TV favourite.

Tyler was visibly shaken after the game but his alleged attacker is said to have not been detained.

The Surrey club were defeated 1-0 thanks to the controversial late penalty, their first defeat of the new season.

“It’s disappointing. Martin was punched and that is not very good,” said Woking manager Alan Dowson.

Tyler is a well-respected coach on the Non-League circuit and commits his time for free to the grassroots game.

“It was a minor incident but it was still unexpected and I’m disappointed,” he told The Sun.

“It was a bit of an affront and people should know better.

“I’m sure Wealdstone will deal with the offender.”

Tyler, a lifelong Woking fan, is now the assistant manager of his boyhood club.

League leaders Woking are yet to decide if they are to take matters any further.
