Bayern give Kompany winning start in German Cup stroll
Bayern Munich have begun the new season with a 4-0 win against second-division SSV Ulm in the German Cup, as Vincent Kompany made his official debut as the team's coach.
Veteran Thomas Müller broke the deadlock in the 12th minute and completed a brace just three minutes later.
The Bavarians found a third goal in a slow second half as Kingsley Coman finished off a cross from newcomer Michael Olise in the 79th, and substitute Harry Kane headed in a fourth in stoppage time.
"Our game approach, our game idea and behaviour when with the ball were overall good. I feel good, not only with my body, but also with the guys. I had fun in the game," Müller told broadcasters Sky.
Ulm had a big chance with just five minutes played to take the lead after a free-kick and a bad clearance by defender Minjae Kim fell to Maurice Krattenmacher. He fired a dangerous shot, but it went wide.
There was also a potential penalty situation for Ulm after Serge Gnabry seemed to use his upper arm to control the ball, but the game went on.
"We did well, we didn't give them so many goal chances. We made their life difficult," Ulm coach Thomas Wörle said.
Ulm goalkeeper Christian Ortag had to be subbed off in the 37th minute after he suffered a concussion in a clash of heads with a teammate.
Kompany took charge of Bayern ahead of the new season, replacing Thomas Tuchel after the German record champions failed to win a title for the first time in over a decade.
He will try to lead Bayern as far as possible in the tournament after they suffered shocking second-round exits in three of the past four seasons.
"We have to keep it going after getting out early in the past few seasons. We've been through a lot but every season is a new one and we always have ambitious goals," Gnabry said.
Earlier, Hoffenheim started the new season with a major scare and needed penalties to defeat fourth-division side Würzburger Kickers 5-3 and advance to the second round.
Kickers took the lead in the 11th minute, but handed Hoffenheim the equaliser when Ebrahim Farahnak scored an own goal in the 18th.
They retook the lead in extra time through Moritz Hannemann, but Marius Bülter hit back for Hoffenheim before the Bundesliga side sealed the win on penalties.
Elsewhere, St Pauli and Mainz advanced after extra time.
St Pauli were behind twice, but Lars Ritzka scored in the 110th minute to complete a 3-2 win, while Mainz won 3-1 at Wehen Wiesbaden.
Defending champions Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart had their respective first-round games postponed to the end of the month because they face each other in the Super Cup final on Saturday.
Stuttgart face Preussen Munster on August 27, while Leverkusen visit Carl Zeiss Jena the day after.
