The 'hilarious' reason behind Minnesota's draft snub of Steph Curry

Steph Curry was destined to be picked up by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2009 NBA Draft, but his passion for golf hindered that prospect.

The Golden State Warriors legend admitted in a recent podcast that he would have been miserable in Minnesota because it’s too cold to play golf.

The man behind the infamous snub was former Timberwolves president David Khan.

“My guy David Kahn. I don’t know where he’s at right now,” Curry said on The Bill Simmons Podcast.

“Everybody knows how much I love golf – play it in my spare time and what not.”

“I think the word on the street was that he didn’t draft me because in Minnesota it’s cold and I wouldn’t be able to play as much golf so I would have been miserable.”

The Timberwolves used their fifth and sixth draft picks to sign Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn instead.

Immediately after, the Golden State Warriors picked up Stephen Curry with the seventh pick in the NBA Draft – and the rest is history.

The podcast coast Bill Simmons was shocked at Curry’s admission, and had to ask if it was true.

“I hope it’s true because that’s hilarious (laughter),” Curry said.

Simmons followed up on Curry’s response to explain the situation.

“It was idiotic in the moment. I did a draft diary. I was going nuts,” Simmons said.

“Because if you’re gonna take two point guards, how are you not one of the two?”

“And then if you’re gonna go all-in on Rubio and you don’t even know if he’s gonna come over…”

The stunning story will be sure to devastate the Timberwolves fans, even though it was over nine years ago now.

Steph Curry turned out to be one of the greatest point guards in the game, and Rubio and Flynn didn’t eventuate as the stars they were supposed to be.
