Hastings and French to miss Wigan opener

Wigan will be without their key Australians Jackson Hastings and Bevan French for Friday's opening Super League match against promoted Leigh at Headingley.

But the Warriors' new Aussie signing Jai Field could make his debut in the halves after being named in Adrian Lam's 21-man squad.

The 2019 Man of Steel Hastings has only been back in England for a fortnight after being given permission to extend his close-season trip back to Australia.

According to Wigan coach Adrian Lam, the man from Wollongong will be restricted to water-carrying duties on Friday.

"Due to Jackson's delayed arrival, we feel that he needs another week of training in the team sessions and environment before he will be selected," Lam said.

"It's great to have him back in training - he has lifted the intensity since his arrival.

"He's an important part of our team and brings us a completely different dimension - we can't wait for him to be back involved.

"Jackson will play a part in Friday's game as part of the group and will be running messages to his teammates on and off the field."

The Warriors will also be without French after his return from Australia was similarly delayed as Zak Hardaker reverts to fullback.

Yet 23-year-old Field, who's been tipped to make a similar impact in Super League to his electric former Parramatta colleague French, looks set to make his bow in the English top-flight.
