Golfer undone by bizarre hazard at Australian Open

Young golfer Jake McLeod was on the receiving end of one of the unluckiest lies in Australian Open history during Saturday's third round.

Not only did the Queenslander land in a fairway bunker on the 16th at Royal Sydney, his ball ended up wedged behind a pine cone.

The youngster was probably thinking he could salvage at least a par on the par-five, until he saw this:

And to make matters worse, he was forced to play the ball as it was lying, as per the rules of golf.

He managed to produce a fairly decent shot, chipping the ball and pine cone at the same time, but ended up sailing it over the green.

He wound up with a bogey – his third-straight in a horror run on the back-nine – and finished up with a one-under 71 to finish six shots off the pace of leader Geoff Ogilvy.
