Hamilton professional David Smail is closer to securing himself a 16th year on the Japan Golf Tour after climbing to 52nd on its Order of Merit.

Smail, 42, is well inside the top-70 finish needed to retain his card after placing 15th at the Taiheiyo Masters on Monday (NZT).

He shot 68, 68, 74 and 72 to finish six-under par, nine shots behind Japanese winner Rio Ishikawa.
