New Zealand golfer Steven Alker will play alongside England's Lee Slattery and American Russ Cochran at the British Open after the groups and tee times were released on Tuesday (NZT).

The trio tee off just before midday (local time) on Thursday at Royal Lytham and St Annes, or 10.53pm NZT. They have an earlier start time on Friday, at 6.41am (5.40pm NZT).

It's the first time a New Zealander has qualified for the Open since 2009, when Josh Geary failed to make the cut by two strokes and David Smail missed out by six.

Tiger Woods joins Spain's Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose (England) in the first and second rounds, while defending champion Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland plays alongside American Zach Johnson and South Africa's Ernie Els.
