Golfer Patrick has been sent to hospital after suffering from pneumonia.

Reed, who has long made headlines for a number of controversial incidents, will miss the BMW Championship, which begins on Thursday in Maryland.

The 31-year-old has not played since the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational earlier this month after withdrawing from The Northern Trust - the opening event of the three-prong season-ending PGA Tour playoffs - with an ankle injury.

He said in a statement on the PGA Tour website: "The good news is, my ankle is okay. The bad news is I've been in the hospital with bilateral pneumonia.

"I'm on the road to recovery. Once I'm cleared from the doctors I look forward to returning. I wish you all the best and I can't wait to get back out there!

"Thank you so much for your support, it means a lot to me. Also, a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center."

Patrick Reeds casts doubt over Ryder Cup qualification

Given this latest news about his health, "Captain America" appears a doubt for next month's Ryder Cup - being outside the automatic qualifiers.

Reed is sitting in ninth, but due to a number of missed tournaments he will not earn enough points to be in contention for an automatic qualification spot.

The world No.17, who has played a key role at the biennial showpiece in recent years, could still be one of Steve Stricker's six captain's picks, although he faces stiff competition from the likes of Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Harris English, Tony Finau and Daniel Berger.

Reed had a rough weekend, according to a statement from his wife, Justine, on Monday.

"Patrick is still in the hospital but he's doing much better," Justine Reed said.

"It was very scary the last few days, and right now we don't have a timeline on his recovery.

"I never count him out but I do know he will not be able to play BMW. We are just taking it one day at a time.

"We are following all of the doctors orders and you can sure bet as soon as they give him the go-ahead to play, he will.

"But our main concern now is just getting him back 100 per cent."

According to the Golf Channel, Reed was diagnosed with the illness while having his ankle examined on Wednesday.

The illness causes infections in both lungs.

Reed was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Friday morning, according to reports.
