Giro changes route after cable car tragedy

·1-min read

Friday's stage of the Giro d'Italia will be rerouted out of respect for the victims of the fatal cable car accident in the Piedmont region.

Italian Infrastructure Minister Enrico Giovannini had asked for the route of the 19th stage to be changed.

Originally riders would have climbed Monte Mottarone, where 14 people died in the cable car accident on Sunday.

The cause of the accident remains unknown. Thirteen people died at the scene of the crash. Two injured children were flown by helicopter to a hospital in Turin, where one later died.

Giovannini also asked organisers to have a moment of reflection during the event to "remember the people who lost their lives in the tragic accident."
