Daria Gavrilova has continued her excellent Itralian Open record with an epic three-set second-round win over reigning Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza.
Gavrilova battled back from 4-0 down in the deciding set to eventually haul in the Spaniard 5-7 6-2 7-6 (8-6) after three hours and eight minutes in a midnight thriller that started on Wednesday night and ended early on Thursday morning.
Muguruza is the fourth French Open champion or world No.1 Gavrilova has beaten in Rome, with her reward being a third-round shot at another in Russian superstar Maria Sharapova.
'Dasha' won an epic rally at 4-0 down in the deciding set that proved a turning point in her against-the-odds triumph.
The Aussie ended up holding serve to finally claim a game in the third set before using that momentum to snare the next four games in a row to take an unthinkable 5-4 lead.
Muguruza managed to snap her third set funk to level it up at 5-5 before setting up a match point on her own serve.
Gavrilova staved off that match point to send the decider into a tie-break, before saving another one as she rattled off three points in a row to book her place in the third round.
