Games in hand are always trouble, admits Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane

Mamelodi Sundowns may have ended the year with a loss to Cape Town City, but it will take a brave man to bet against them claiming yet another domestic accolade.

In spite of a slow start to the 2017/18 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season, the Brazilians finally hit their stride and are now in pole position in the title race as they head into the new year.

While Sundowns’ recent form has been marvelled by the majority of local football fans, the effects of the previous campaign which saw them lift the 2016 Caf Champions League had certainly left them with scars.

Masandawana’s only triumph in 2017 came in the Caf Super Cup earlier in the year, but they have since failed to replicate the same success after being knocked out of this year’s Champions League at the quarter-final rounds before suffering an early elimination in the Telkom Knockout Cup.

However, their recent misfortunes have not dampened Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane’s optimism.

“Our 2017 is mixed,” Mosimane was quoted as saying by The Star.

“It was a blessing in disguise to get knocked out of the Telkom Knockout, not to say that we didn’t want to win it. We wanted to win Telkom, but being out gave us that nice run where we concentrated on the league. You can’t go for everything because you end up with nothing,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sundowns still have a game in hand as they head into 2018, but Mosimane is not taking anything for granted.

"Games in hand are always trouble. You see SuperSport United, they are struggling to catch up with their games in hand. We have one game in hand which we need to win,” he emphasised.
