Fresno State head coach Jeff Tedford is expected to step down from his post due to health reasons, according to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic. Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel also reported that Tedford’s staff had been pulled off the road and a press conference is scheduled for Friday.

Tedford will step down after three relatively successful seasons at Fresno State, where he went 26-14 and reached a high ranking of No. 18 at the end of last season.

Former Fresno State offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer, who now holds the same position at Indiana, is expected to be a leading candidate to replace Tedford, per The Athletic.

The exact nature of Tedford’s health issues have not been revealed, but it’s worth noting he had to take a leave of absence from his job as offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014 due to a heart procedure.

Prior to his time as Fresno State head coach, Tedford was most known for his ability to develop quarterbacks during his time as head coach at Cal, as well as offensive coordinator at Fresno State and Oregon. In an 11-year span, six quarterbacks coached at some point by Tedford — Trent Dilfer, David Carr, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, Kyle Boller, Aaron Rodgers — were selected in the first round of the NFL draft.

Rodgers ended up being Tedford’s greatest pupil, and the Green Bay Packers great vigorously criticized Cal’s decision to fire the coach in 2012. With 82 career victories at Berkeley, Tedford remains the winningest coach in Cal history.
