Fowler sets up two goals as City go top of table

Striker Khadija Shaw scored twice for Manchester City as they thrashed Liverpool 4-1 away from home to take a three-point lead over Chelsea at the top of England's Women's Super League.

Australian striker Mary Fowler wasn't on the scoresheet but she again provided a creative spark for City, with two assists.

Lauren Hemp broke the deadlock for City and Jess Park added a second, from Fowler's pass, before Jamaica striker Shaw thumped in the third to round off a three-goal, eight-minute salvo.

Shaw made it 4-0 five minutes after the break when she rose highest to head in Fowler's corner – her 17th goal in 17 league games. Taylor Hinds grabbed a stunning consolation goal for Liverpool.

City moved on to 46 points after 18 games, three ahead of Chelsea who face Arsenal in Sunday's League Cup final and have a game in hand. Liverpool remained fourth on 29 points.

In Saturday's other match Aston Villa were held 2-2 at home by Leicester City, who this week sacked manager Willie Kirk following an investigation into an allegation he had a relationship with a player.
