Former LSU QB Max Johnson transfers to Texas A&M after brother signs with Aggies

LSU's Max Johnson is heading to the school he last played against.

Johnson announced Friday that he would be transferring to Texas A&M. His decision was announced two days after his brother, Jake, said he'd be signing with the Aggies.

Johnson, the elder son of former NFL QB Brad Johnson, was LSU's starting quarterback in 2021 after Myles Brennan missed the season due to injury and TJ Finley transferred to Auburn. Johnson finished the season 225-of-373 passing for 2,815 yards with 27 touchdown passes and six interceptions.

Johnson was 22-of-38 passing for 306 yards and three touchdowns in LSU’s 27-24 win over Texas A&M on Nov. 27. His third TD pass of the night came with 20 seconds left, when he found Jaray Jenkins for the game-winning TD.

That win pushed LSU to 6-6, sent former coach Ed Orgeron out with a win and got the Tigers bowl-eligible for a Texas Bowl appearance on Jan. 4. But Johnson made it clear he wouldn't participate in that game when he announced he'd be transferring from LSU shortly after Brian Kelly was hired as the Tigers' next coach.

At Texas A&M, Johnson will compete for the starting QB job with Haynes King, freshman QB Eli Stowers and incoming four-star signee Conner Weigman. King opened the season as A&M's starter but suffered a season-ending lower leg fracture in the second game of the season against Colorado. Zach Calzada took over as A&M's starter for the rest of 2021 but announced this week that he would be transferring.

Jake Johnson signed with Texas A&M on Wednesday. He was previously committed to LSU to play with his brother but decommitted when Max announced he was transferring. Jake Johnson is a four-star recruit and the No. 1 tight end in the country, according to Rivals.
