A lacklustre World Cup campaign see's England knocked out in the group stage. Gerrard's attempted clearing header agaisnt Uruguay fell into the path of Luis Suarez who scored the winning goal in a 2-1 loss for England.

Gerrard's last game for England was against Costa Rica in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He retires from international duty having scored 21 goals and played at six major tournaments. He ranks third on England's most-capped player list behind only Peter Shilton (125) and David Beckham (115).

Announcing his Retirement
Steven Gerrard's retirement was made official whilst on Liverpool's pre-season tour. In a statement released on the FA’s website, Gerrard said: Gerrard said: “I have enjoyed every minute of representing my country and it is a sad day for me knowing that I won’t pull on the England shirt again."
