World Cup 2014: Unwanted XI

Spain's World Cup squad would certainly confuse Diego Lopez, as he is keeping veteran Iker Casillas out of the Real Madrid goal, but coach Vicente del Bosque doesn't see Carlo Ancelotti's logic.

Miranda has been incredible in defence during Atletico Madrid's La Liga and Champion's League campaigns, but was fighting for the last spot in Scolari's squad and he chose Napoli's Henrique as the fourth central defender. Miranda, however, is on the injury standby list.

Roy Hodgson has discarded Chelsea defender Ashely Cole, instead going with Everton's specialist free kick taker Leighton Baines, with Luke Shaw as back-up. Cole subsequently quit the England side.

Lucas Neill delivered several sub-par performances for Australia during the World Cup qualifying stages and international friendlies. He desperately tried to find a club in the lead up to the World Cup, but even when he did, Ange Postecoglou told Neill he wasn't wanted for the Socceroos' defence.

Gareth Barry is one of the English Premier League's most underrated players and he has also been overlooked for England. Barry has been in great form for Everton, but was kept out by Frank Lampard and standby player Michael Carrick.

Lucas Leiva was a consistent performer in the engine room of Liverpool FC's midfield, but failed to make the 23 players who will play for five-time champions Brazil. Leiva will only make the team if injury problems arise in coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad.

Kaka is a true superstar of Brazilian football, but coach Luiz Felipe Scolari could find no room for the man who has scored 29 goals from 89 appearances. Despite his age of 32, Kaka would have brought invaluable experience to a young Brazil squad.

Philippe Coutinho was an integral part of Liverpool FC's surge to the top of the English Premier League. The 21-year-old was devastating from the wing, but was overlooked by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari for rival attackers from Chelsea.

Ronaldinho is one of the most exciting players to ever grace the football pitch. The attacking midfielder has been great for Brazil, having scored 33 goals from 97 appearances, but sadly, he won't be there in June.

Alejandro Sabella does have the strike force of Sergio Aguero, Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Ezequiel Lavezzi, but Carloz Tevez has been stellar for Argentina and is a massive loss for the World Cup.

Mario Gomez, despite some knee trouble, was a shock omission from Joachim Low's German side, given the team has a lack of depth up front, as seen in the Champions League. Gomez is tall, fast and a very skillful finisher.
