The Arsenal midfielder was ruled out of Friday's win over Netherlands after suffering discomfort in his knee during training with the Three Lions.

He was initially hopeful of recovering in time to take on Italy in England's next friendly, but he has now been removed from the squad in order to continue treatment back at Arsenal.

"Jack Wilshere won't feature against Italy and has now withdrawn from the group," it was confirmed on England's official Twitter page.

Wilshere will now extend the wait for another international appearance, having last featured on the pitch for his nation during Euro 2016.

Liverpool's Joe Gomez is the other injury worry for England, who kicked off a March friendly double-header with an accomplished 1-0 win over the Oranje.

The defender lasted less than 10 minutes in Amsterdam before limping off the field with an apparent ankle problem.

Unlike Wilshere, however, Gomez will initially remain with the squad while further assessments are carried out on his physical well-being.

England and Italy meet at Wembley on Tuesday, with the visitors eager to bounce back after going down 2-0 at the hands of Argentina on Friday.
