NorthEast United coach Avram Grant failed to turn up for the official pre-match press conference before his side's Indian Super League (ISL) encounter against FC Goa on Sunday.
The mandatory media interaction was scheduled for 4:00 PM IST on Saturday, a day before the game (as per standard practice). However, the Israeli manager did not reach the stadium, which is the venue for the presser, until 4:45 PM by what time all the assembled media had left.
This is the first time that a team has skipped an official pre-match press conference in the ISL.
Skipping an official press conference could warrant sanction for the team committing the offence and NorthEast United might find themselves in soup over their failure to have somebody representing the club addressing the media.
The timings for the pre-match conference is decided on Matchday-2 (two days prior to the matchday) after consulting with the clubs. In this case, the time communicated by the league to the accredited media was 4:00 PM IST after confirming with NorthEast United. The FC Goa press conference was scheduled for 3:30 PM IST and went on without any hiccups.
The Highlanders, however, requested to start the conference at 4:10 PM. The request was approved but the club did not make it for the presser even then.
After being officially announced coach of NorthEast United, Grant has twice avoided addressing his home media in Guwahati as well. It remains to be seen if the ISL takes cognitive action on the Highlanders.
