Despite the heavy investment that saw Enugu Rangers recruit coach Gbenga Ogunbote and 18 new players, the 2016 Nigerian Professional Football League champions started the 2018 season on a bad note, losing to Akwa United and Lobi Stars.

Pressure was already mounting and talks of another potential relegation battle. The Flying Antelopes, however, went to newly-promoted Heartland FC, sealing a 1-0 victory.
