'Lord Bendtner' delivers ultimate Irish insult

Ireland's World Cup playoff capitulation against Denmark was embarrassing enough before Nicklas Bendtner delivered the ultimate insult to Irish fans.

A world-class performance from Christian Eriksen, that included a top-corner wonder goal against Ireland, helped Denmark seal their spot in the World Cup.

Hat-trick hero Eriksen was the difference as Denmark silenced a thunderous Dublin crowd to beat the Republic of Ireland 5-1 in the return leg, following a 0-0 stalemate in Copenhagen.

It all started well for the home side with Irish defender Shane Duffy opening the scoring via a sixth-minute header.

But it all went downhill at a rapid speed for Ireland as Eriksen and the Danes took the contest by the scruff of the net.

By the 73rd minute the contest was over and the Irish had already given up on going to Russia, with Eriksen's third goal making it 4-1 on the night.

However, things were about to get a whole lot worse for the Irish, with Bendtner - the player everyone loves to hate - still yet to play his part.

One poor Irish fan seemed to foresee the doom coming his side's way with a freakishly hilarious premonition about how the former Arsenal outcast was about to troll his side.

The striker is referred to by many in the football world as 'Lord Bendtner' - a sarcastic reference to his own opinion of himself and how Gunners fans actually portray him.

In emphatic proof that the footballing Gods are a brutal lot, the Danish 'Lord' did indeed come off the bench to drive the final nail in Ireland's coffin by winning and then converting a penalty to seal the 5-1 result.

Cue widespread disbelief and sarcasm from fans on Twitter.

While Bendtner and Denmark booked their ticket to Russia in style, one common lament from fans was the talent that will be missing from world football's greatest stage.
