Sam Kerr makes history with four goals in epic comeback

Matildas star Sam Kerr has produced the first four-goal haul in National Women’s Soccer League history to lift Sky Blue FC to a 5-4 win over the Seattle Reign.

Seattle led 3-0 at half-time, the last goal coming in injury time, but the second half was all about Kerr, who was this week named to the 10-woman shortlist for the Best FIFA Women's Player 2017 award.

The 23-year-old scored in the 48th, 68th and 71st minutes to level things up at 3-3, with her best goal the third as she took everyone on and scored from outside the box.

But all her hard work looked like it would be for nought as the Reign took the lead again in the 85th minute.

Yet Sky Blue kept pushing, equalising for a second time through Maya Hayes in the 91st minute.

A draw would have been momentous after trailing 3-0 at half-time but the New Jersey-based side weren't done.

Kerr missed a penalty kick in the 93rd minute - Seattle were called for a handball in the box - but she made up for it a couple of minutes later.

From a corner Kerr found herself in the middle of a pack, somehow rising to beat everyone to it for a looping header and the three points.

"This comeback showed huge character," Kerr said.

"We can’t keep conceding lots of goals like we have been, but I know we will continue to grow.

"I am really proud of my teammates because we fought through and found a way to win the game.”

As well as being the only NWSL player to score four goals in a game, Kerr is also the only player to have recorded two hat-tricks in the one season.

Her latest haul came just a few weeks after scoring a hat-trick for the Matildas against Japan during their triumphant Tournament of Nations campaign.
