Arsenal goalkeeper jets home for ice hockey match

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech swapped his football boots for a pair of ice skates in an impressive ice hockey cameo.

The Arsenal shot-stopper's ability stretches well beyond the football field as evidenced by his performance on the ice rink.

The 35-year-old is currently readying himself for the start of the new Premier League season, with the Gunners kicking things off against Leicester on Friday (Saturday AEST).

But manager Arsene Wenger granted the veteran leave in midweek to head back to his Czech Republic homeland and figure in a testimonial clash for countryman Martin Havlat.

Cech proved, in a video published by iSport TV, that he is a fine all-round sportsman as he took to the ice with a smile and proceeded to make a number of smart stops.

Havlat, like Cech, is a hero in his homeland having spent 15 seasons representing six NHL teams.

Cech was only allowed to figure in one of the three periods on Wednesday, in which he conceded three goals.

He was, however, at home on the ice and clearly comfortable in all sorts of pads and helmets.

“I had to promise Arsenal that I would come back immediately after the match," Cech told reporters.

“I've got training in the morning, it was only a quick trip.

“You have to know your limits, do it reasonably and don't get too tired. Spending one period on the ice is good exercise for me, a great experience and very enjoyable.”

Cech helped Arsenal to Community Shield success on Sunday, as the Gunners edged out Chelsea in a penalty shoot-out, and will be hoping that the momentum gained in that encounter will carry the Gunners through their opening fixture in the 2017-18 Premier League campaign.
