Victory set to lose Kiwi star Marco Rojas

A-League grand finalists Melbourne Victory have taken another hit in the transfer stakes, with Marco Rojas on his way back to Europe.

Victory confirmed on Wednesday that Rojas would travel to the Netherlands to undergo a medical after the club agreed a deal with an unnamed team.

Newshub reported that the New Zealander's destination is Dutch Eredivisie club Heerenveen.

"I can’t thank everyone at Melbourne Victory enough," Rojas said.

"They showed great faith in me after a difficult few years in Europe and really helped me to get my career back on track. I would absolutely have no hesitation returning to Melbourne Victory in the future.

"The club is very important to me and has been nothing but professional during both my spells in Melbourne. But right now I’m focused on proving myself at the top level and I’m excited to be heading back to Europe."

Confirmation of the transfer will mean only six of Melbourne's starting XI from last season's grand final loss to Sydney remain at the club.

But they have already re-signed former double-winning winger Kosta Barbarouses, and ex-captain Mark Milligan is reportedly in line for a return after spending the last two years in the UAE.

Fringe Socceroos utility Rhys Williams has signed from Perth Glory, while Thomas Deng has returned from his loan to Dutch club PSV Eindhoven's reserve team.

Rojas's departure will be a blow to coach Kevin Muscat, however, after the 25-year-old attacker produced 12 goals and 11 assists in his first season back in Australia.

Melbourne will be due a transfer fee from Heerenveen after Rojas signed a two-year deal when he joined the Victorian club last season.
