Jose Mourinho’s men will pay €35 million up front for the 12-time capped defender, plus there will be an additional payment of up to €10m, including bonuses.

Lindelof has spent his entire professional career with Benfica, with the 22-year-old arriving at the club in 2012-13 to play in the youth system. From there, he graduated to the B team and ultimately into the senior squad.

In 2015-16, he turned out 23 times for the Lisbon outfit, but over the course of the last season, he has become a regular, featuring on 47 occasions, including eight in the Champions League.

United will hope that he can continue to progress at Old Trafford, having invested significantly in him.
