Williams: Kaizer Chiefs were never in the title race

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Mark Williams says as much the defeat blew their title aspirations, they were never in the hunt for the title, but could still have a big say in where it eventually ends up.

“They were never in the hunt for the title. I think that they have been consistent and won a couple of games and when you look at the other teams (in the title race) they were drawing and suddenly Chiefs were part of the title race,” Williams told Goal.

The Amakhosi still have to play SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits, who are also part of the title chase and by facing them could indirectly decide where the title ends up this season.

“They could still have a big say in the title race because they still have to play the likes of Wits and SuperSport,” Williams said.

Furthermore, Williams concurs that the setback where they missed influential players like captain Itumeleng Khune and defender Lorenzo Gordinho shows the club’s lack of depth.

“It’s always going to be like that because when you play against top teams you don’t expect to see the weakness in defence.

“With Khune not being there to organize the back-four as well as Gordinho, it breaks up that momentum because (Eric) Mathoho wasn’t spot on. He didn’t react well to deal with City’s quick attacking players,” Williams said.
