Rivers United defeated Rayon Sports 2-0 to take control of their Caf Confederation Cup play-off tie played on Sunday evening.
Goals from Emeka Atuloma and Guy Kuemian were all Stanley Eguma’s men needed to get past the visitors at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Having crashed out of the Caf Champions League to Sudan’s El Merrikh, the Pride of Rivers got demoted to the Confederation Cup – where the must negotiate their way past Masudi Djuma’s men to reach the group phase.
And, with 29 minutes into the game, Atuloma volleyed past goalkeeper Jean-Luc Ndayishimiye after receiving a cross from Ifeanyi Nweke.
The Rivers onslaught continued in the 51st minute as Kueiman doubled his side’s lead – which proved to be the winner for the Nigerians.
The visitors never looked like mounting any sort of response and they now have a mountain to climb in the return fixture on April 22 at Stade Régional Nyamirambo, Kigali
