Aubameyang 'stars' in horror show against Benfica

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's shocking misses cost his Borussia Dortmund side a chance of victory against Benfica in the Champions League.

The Dortmund striker squandered three glorious chances to give his side a precious away goal, as they crashed to a 1-0 defeat in the round of 16 first leg tie in Lisbon.

Normally lethal in front of goal, Aubameyang's uncharacteristically wasteful performance included a missed penalty that would have drawn Dortmund level on 58 minutes.

Aubameyang failed to apply a touch to a teasing cross from Raphael Guerreiro, before he was given a chance to make amends from the penalty spot in the second half.

However, the striker's tame spot-kick was easily saved by Benfica keeper Ederson, and Aubameyang's horror show came to an embarrassing end.

Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel took his striker off straight after the penalty miss and replaced him with Andre Schurrle in the 62nd minute.

"Aubameyang is not fully fit after the African Nations Cup," Tuchel said.

"His body language did not suggest that he would do better after giving away the penalty."

Greek striker Kostas Mitroglou scored the only goal of the game when he prodded home from close range just after halftime, following an initial save from Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki.

Aubameyang has a chance to atone for his performance when Dortmund host Benfica in the return leg in Germany on March 8.
