Arsenal star breaks down in heartbreaking tribute to Chapecoense

Arsenal's Brazilian defender Gabriel has broken down in an emotional interview in which he remembered Chapecoense coach Ciao Junior and his former teammates after they died in a plane crash in Colombia.

Nineteen Chapecoense players, many of whom Gabriel knew personally, were killed when the plane they were travelling on crashed near Medellin on Tuesday.

Speaking after Arsenal's League Cup loss to Southampton on Thursday, Gabriel shed tears as he recalled playing under deceased manager Ciao Junior for Brazilian side Vitoria.

"It is a bit hard to talk about what happened, I wish the families can have the strength and I hope God can comfort their hearts," he said.

"I had many friends over there, I played for Vitoria for five years and I worked with the coach and the backroom staff, and two other players as well.

"The minimum I can do is send my condolences to all their families and wish that they can carry on. I know it's not easy to lose a member of the family.

"I know it from experience, I've lost a brother myself and I know how painful it is," he said.

"I ask for strength for this team that enchanted Brazilian football, a group that five years ago was in the fourth division and surprised everyone. We only have good memories to keep in our hearts from this team and the friends I made through football.

"We have a message group from Brazil and I texted them to say 'don't leave for tomorrow what you can do today'."

"So if you think you want to do something just get out there and do it because we don't know what tomorrow brings."

Civil aviation officials in Colombia have since confirmed the aircraft had run out of fuel at the moment of impact.

A minute's silence will be held ahead of all of next week's Champions League and Europa League matches as a mark of respect to those who died.
