Footballer fakes injury to make mid-match getaway from police

Incredible scenes transpired in Ecuador's clash with Chile as Enner Valencia made a remarkable getaway from police chasing him for child support payments.

The Ecuadorian striker, currently on loan at Everton from West Ham, was confronted by police when he arrived at the stadium in Quito on Friday morning.

Police gathered at the door of the team bus before the World Cup qualifier but were unable to detain Valencia, who is believed to owe his former wife $US17,000 ($A22,435), due to the intervention of teammates, according to the El Universo newspaper.

He evaded arrest on that occasion, taking the field and orchestrating the opening goal.

He then orchestrated a dramatic escape act, substituting himself and exiting the stadium in an ambulance.

Police pursued Valencia on foot as he was being transported to the ambulance in a golf cart.
