Footballer in hot water over throat-slitting gesture

Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji, on loan at Werder Bremen, will be the subject of an investigation by the German FA after replays from a match between Bremen and Mainz showed him making a slit-throat gesture at an opposing player on Saturday.

Djilobodji made the gesture after a grapple with Mainz midfielder Pablo De Blasis. The incident, however, was missed by the referee.

Sky Sports reports that the governing body has confirmed that they are looking into the matter, which could probably result in a ban for the defender.

Djilobodji joined the Blues last summer, but got just one minute of action under Jose Mourinho, who claimed that he had nothing to do with the player arriving at Stamford Bridge.

He would make one substitute appearance in a Capital One Cup match against Wallsall, and was subsequently loaned to Bremen.

He has made 10 league starts since joining, but could face yet another spell on the sidelines for his actions during the team's 1-1 draw with Mainz.

Bremen manager Viktor Skripnik, who admitted that Djilobodji 'has a temper', expects the defender to be punished. "I'll accept whatever comes," he would add.

The team's director of sport Thomas Eichin told Sky in Germany: "I'll have a serious talk to him about it and he won't do it again in the future."
