Grella scores fastest goal in MLS history

Mike Grella has broken Tim Cahill’s Major League Soccer record, scoring within seven seconds for the New York Red Bulls.

The attacker now holds the record for the quickest ever goal in the competition as his side went on to beat Philadelphia Union 4-1 over the weekend.

Grella raced to the ball and attacked the open lane after flat-footed midfielder Michael Lahoud allowed the initial backpass to roll past him. With Steven Vitoria backpedalling, Grella juked left and sent a left-footed shot deflecting off the defender and past goalkeeper Andre Blake.

Tim Cahill’s previous record stood at eight seconds.
