Photo of Manchester United manager sparks online outrage
Manchester City women’s star Toni Duggan has been forced to apologise after posing for a picture with Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.
Duggan, who also plays for England, was out celebrating a cup win over Birmingham City ladies on Sunday evening when her and team-mates stumbled across Van Gaal.
The Dutchman and his squad were in Chinese restaurant Wings holding their own celebration to mark a 4-2 win over Manchester City, and Duggan posted a picture with the man who had just overseen the derby win.
And the unfortunate timing of Duggan’s Instagram post saw her come under fire from unhappy City fans.
Duggan deleted the post and then made a public apology via Facebook:
"I would like to apologise to all MCFC fans for the error of judgement I made last night," it read.
"I now appreciate the significance of my actions and can assure everyone connected with Manchester City that I am proud to represent the Club and wear the shirt."
After initially being targeted for abuse, Duggan is now being given lots of support on Twitter:

Crikey. How is this an error of judgement? He's the Man Utd manager, not Jimmy Savile. Shouldn't have apologised. https://t.co/kSeNt7Q6X3

A new low for social media as @toni_duggan apologises for a mis-timed photo. The only apologies should be from the cretins who abused her.

I'm trying to get upset about Sterling/shisha/laughing gas or Toni Duggan/LVG but my well of disproportionate outrage is empty
