Former Leeds, Liverpool ace Kewell to call it quits

Melbourne Heart veteran Harry Kewell is set to announce his retirement from professional football.

The 35-year old attacking midfielder will today call time on his extensive playing career which has seen him perform at the top level in England, Turkey, Qatar and his homeland of Australia.

Kewell will complete his duties with the Heart this A-League season before exiting the game as a man who at his best, was one of Australias most dangerous players.

Kewell began his career with Leeds United back in 1996 before moving to Liverpool in 2008 after more than 200 appearances and 50 goals for the Whites.

During his time at Anfield, Kewell won the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League with the Reds as well as the 2005/06 FA Cup, 2005 UEFA Super Cup and 2006 FA Community Shield.

A stint with Istanbul giants Galatasaray ensued before he returned home to Australia when signing with the Melbourne Victory in 2011. He spent one season with the two-time A-League champions before trying his luck on a short-term deal in the Qatari Stars League with Al-Gharafa.

Kewell then joined the Heart in June last year and has thus far managed 15 appearances for the fledgling outfit.

The Sydney-born winger ends his career having represented the Socceroos on 56 occasions, scoring 17 goals, including a vital strike in the 2-2 draw with Croatia at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
