Football star's wife, 38, reveals shock cancer diagnosis

The wife of legendary Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has dropped some worrying cancer news just weeks after her husband’s own health scare.

Spanish journalist Sara Carbonero announced on Tuesday that she has undergone surgery for a malignant ovarian tumour for which she will undergo treatment in the coming months.

In a message on her Instagram account, the journalist explains that the tumour was detected in a medical examination a few days ago.

Carbonero explains that it happened while her family was still recovering "from a fright", in reference to the heart attack suffered by her husband on May 1 while training with his team Porto.

"This time it has touched me, that happy word of 6 letters that I still find it difficult to write," says Carbonero in the message.

“I’m calm and confident everything is going to be okay. I know the road will be tough but will also have a happy ending.

“I have the support of my family and friend and a great medical team.”

“I take advantage of this moment to ask that my journalist colleagues show the respect and understanding they have always shown me, especially in these difficult and delicate times for me and my family.”

Carbonero made the announcement one day after the 38th birthday of Casillas, ex-captain of Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, considered one of the best goalkeepers in the history of world football.

Casillas is still recovering from surgery he had on May 1 after collapsing during training.

He left hospital after five days and said he was "lucky" to be alive but had no immediate plans for the future.

"The important thing is to be here... I don't know what the future may bring," he said.

Casillas has 167 Spain caps, winning the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships, and also played more than 700 games for Real Madrid.

He joined FC Porto in 2015 and recently extended his contract to 2020 with the option of an additional 12 months.

He said Porto had told him they wanted to keep him until he turned 40.

"Casillas still has a year left on his contract and we want him to remain part of FC Porto's structure, and not only for one year," club president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa told Thursday's sports daily O Jogo.

"Casillas is one of us and he will always have a place at FC Porto."
