Football star's contract terminated after arrest over fatal accident

A Brazilian football star has had his contract ripped up after he was arrested over a car accident that killed a motorcyclist.

Renan, who plays for Brazilian club Palmeiras and was on loan to Bragantino, was arrested by police following a collision between his car and a motorbike in the early hours of Friday morning.

The motorcyclist, identified as 38-year-old Eliezer Pena, was killed in the accident around 80 kilometres north of Brazil's capital Sao Paulo.

According to local reports, Renan was driving a Honda Civic when he veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a Honda motorcycle.

The 20-year-old reportedly refused to take a breathalyser test after being arrested at the scene.

He is said to have been driving with a provisional licence, which has since been suspended.

Palmeiras likely to terminate Renan's contract

Bragantino have now terminated his loan contract, with Palmeiras expected to do the same in the coming days.

The 20-year-old has played for Palmeiras since 2020 is contracted until 2025.

He played 54 games for the club, scoring one goal, before a further eight games for Bragantino.

The fullback represented Brazil at under-17 level on six occasions.

"Palmeiras received information this Friday morning about the car accident involving athlete Renan," the club said in a statement.

"The club is in contact with Red Bull Bragantino in order to follow the case closely and provide all necessary assistance to family members of the victim, with whom he sympathises in this moment of great sadness."

Likewise, Bragantino said: "Red Bull Bragantino received information this Friday morning about the car accident involving athlete Renan.

"The club is following the case closely and makes itself available to provide all necessary assistance to the authorities and the victim's family, with whom it sympathises at this time of great sadness."
